WOW Awards Creates New Category to Honour ‘Connect Now’ Founder Jennifer Henczel
Henczel Named Top ‘Influencer and Connecter’ At 10th Annual BC Women’s Leadership Event
26 nominees took a celebratory bow from the stage of the 10th Annual Women of Worth (WOW) Awards at Burnaby’s Grand Villa Hotel on May 31st, but one of them returned a few minutes later to collect an award for a new category that she herself had inspired. Speaker, author, and founder of the Connect Now business network Jennifer Henczel is the esteemed British Columbian female leadership awards’ first-time recipient of the ‘Influencer and Connector’ honour.
The newly created award is a suitable way of capping off an intense period of working at the vanguard of business marketing trends. 18 months ago, Henczel decided to create the Connect Now Business Network to bring British Columbian entrepreneurs together for face-to-face networking. Since then, the network has grown to include hundreds of members, all working to grow their businesses through the contacts they make at Connect Now events.
‘Being honoured as an “Influencer and Connector” was especially meaningful for me because it came from the “Women of Worth” people,’ says Henczel. ‘Although Connect Now is for men and women, I think the group offers special encouragement to female entrepreneurs. Being a woman in business is not always easy, because I feel women are often encouraged from childhood to see other females as competitors, rather than allies. I have always chosen collaboration over sabotage, and that approach has helped me to grow my business and help others grow theirs. It’s truly win-win.’
Henczel’s vision of a more collaborative local business community through increased networking points to a growing trend. Dr. Ivan Misner, dubbed ‘the father of modern networking’ by CNN, argued in 2008 that social media and face-to-face networking would become more integrated, as ‘the technology will allow greater connections—while the face-to-face will allow deeper connections.’ Misner’s predictions are certainly proving to be accurate in the case of the Connect Now network, which is successfully blending in-person events with social networking tools like the website Meetup.com. Certainly, 18 months of dramatic membership growth underscores the ongoing relevance of in-person networking for business growth—perhaps especially for female-owned businesses. Interestingly, Dr. Misner discovered through a 2011 survey of 12,000 businesspeople that women receive a higher percentage of business through face-to-face networking than men do.
