Are you doing what matters most? If not, why not? Here are 4 of the many strategies I use to stay focused on what truly matters – and cut from my life what doesn’t.
Your Checklist of Questions
When choosing your tasks, check in with a checklist of questions that help you to determine if tasks or activities align with your focus purpose. Ask: Does it excite you? Does it align with your purpose? Is the activity directly related to the lifestyle or money you want to make? What does my life look like ten years from now, and does this activity serve that vision? These questions, and others that you will develop along the way will help you to better decide what to do now, what to do later, and what not to do at all. What other questions can you ask yourself about each activity or request that arises?
Your ‘Tomorrow List’
At the end of the day, I write a list of the key things I need to do the next day. Then I leave it and enjoy my evening and have a restful sleep. This creates clarity and frees up my brain and body to rest and reset. It’s about programming your brain to focus on what you want to accomplish, rather than worrying about what you are not accomplishing. I don’t worry about things, and as a result I rarely feel overwhelmed, and I get more done. I attribute that in part to this process of letting go of my tasks until the next day. The next morning, I feel ready, focused, and clear about the day.
Your ‘Turn Your Learning into Earning’ List
Having a mindset of lifelong learning is key to success. But, today, with so much information flying at us at such a fast rate, we need to stay focused on what we choose to absorb and learn. Ask yourself, does this leaning lead to wisdom? How will learning this help my soul, lifestyle, or pocket? What knowledge can I start implementing before I learn something else new? What expertise do I currently have that I can turn into extra income? What ideas am I sitting on that need to become a reality now, not later? What is the first action step to make that happen? Finally, considering the time you spend on learning and implementing, which is greater? What would you estimate the percentages to be? Is it time to turn your learning into action? Also include things that you still need to learn.
Your ‘Things to Stop Doing’ List
Make a list of things that are not directly serving the lifestyle or income you desire. What can slide right now? Eliminate things that aren’t serving your goals and purpose. What percentage of time are you doing what matters most? How can you increase that percentage today?
